Stay Current With Today's Technology!
Computers and the
Internet offer a vast and unique opportunity to enrich the lives
of those fortunate enough to have the ability to use them.
Current
generations have been exposed to computers since
childhood and take them for granted, but our senior generation
has been virtually forgotten by the information technology
society.
During a
recent visit to a retirement community in Florida, I witnessed firsthand the
desire our seniors have to "get connected". I realized a service was needed
to help our seasoned citizens become familiar with computers, and do so in a
low key, peer group setting. To accomplish this, I have developed an
Introduction to Computers class, specifically designed for Seasoned
Citizens. The class includes an introduction to computers, Microsoft Word, the
Internet, and E-mail. The class is 8 hours long and may be split over two 4-hour
days if preferred. The classes are purposely kept small, with a maximum of ten
students per class. These classes will be held at your location and I will supply
the computers if necessary (I can hold the classes at my location, but they will
be limited to four students).
Seniors do much better in a peer group setting and the
class will proceed at a pace geared toward the inexperienced, older user. I will
also offer 30 days of free e-mail support to those who participate in the class.
For those unable to attend a class I will offer individual
instruction at their location (or mine) on a limited basis. Again, I will supply the
computer if necessary. Individual instruction is offered in the form of packages, that
may be customized to suit different needs. The packages consist of Word Processing,
the Internet, e-mail, or any combination of those.
As the world continues to become more dependent on e-mail and the Web, the pressure
for senior citizens to stay in touch using this technology continues to grow. As one
spokesperson for a Senior Citizen Center that offers classes stated "As long as we
offer the introduction class, we will always have enough sign ups. Our seniors truly
want to be a part of the computer age and computer technology."
