These are programs installed on your computer, most of the time without your knowledge, and generally referred to as "spy-ware". What can these programs do besides what's already listed? Some of them just track your movements on the web, but others are much more dangerous. Some can contact their home base every time you're on the Internet and send them information as you type (like passwords, bank account numbers, pins, etc). They can also install hidden phone dialers that phone long distance numbers without your knowledge. I've seen them install dialers that called $3.99 per minute numbers and guess who gets the bill!   • When you use your browser to view Web sites, other instances of your browser open to display Web site advertisements.
  • Your Web browser’s home page unexpectedly changes.

  • New toolbars are unexpectedly added to your Web browser.
  • You cannot start a program.
  • When you click a link in a program, the link does not work.
  • Your Web browser suddenly closes or stops responding.
  • It takes a much longer time to start or to resume your computer.
